Taste of Dixie Diner is tucked away next to a classic motor-inn style motel in Cross City with an unassuming exterior--totally looking the part of a mid-century motel's restaurant, nothing fancy. Going inside, the interior is much the same: gumball vending machines, a simple layout and furnishing in decent shape but obviously kinda well-worn, family photos of the restaurant's owners, some cowboy-themed decorations (look for the horse statues on a shelf that goes all the way around the top of the main dining room! So cool!). The waitresses are nice, call you "sugar", and the whole atmosphere is perfectly Southern. Anyone who doesn't believe Florida "is really the South" needs to come here. Then they'll be convinced. Still, this alone would not bring this restaurant to five stars: I've seen plenty of local country cookin'-style restaurants in small towns throughout Florida and the rest of the South that warrant three stars at best. However, the food here wins best in show. They had a typical dinner buffet on Sunday night, not surprising, but wow: the quality of their food is unreal! Great fried chicken, superb green beans, top-notch mac n cheese, superior corn bread, and a rice-based vegetable casserole that was actually amazing--I only tried it because I thought "well, I suppose this looks healthy and I should have a bit" but it was really very, very, good. Their stewed tomatoes also were a stand-out item on the buffet, cooked much as I've had them in West Virginia and Virginia where this dish seems to be more common than Florida and Georgia. Their collard greens weren't the best I have had, but alright and other than that, every dish on the buffet I tried was exceptional. It's not fancy, no, but for country cookin', this is as good as you'll find and exceeds places like Savannah's Lady and Sons which are known as more of a fine dining experience built around the same sort of cuisine. They even have a homemade donut type dessert which the waitress told me is actually made of biscuit dough but was very tasty. If you're ever down to Cross City, this restaurant most certainly deserves a visit.

The locals have a treasure in the Taste of Dixie Diner. With the wonderful buffet there was no need to look at the menu but I'm sure we would have found a bevy of home cooked choices. The buffet had crispy juicy fried chicken, fall of the bone ribs, roast beef and gravy, ham and beans, homestyle corn casserole, dressing, green beans, fries okra, full salad bar with cold shrimp. Leave room for desser- included with the meal. We had a choice of homemade cake or banana pudding. Nothing fancy just Wonderful food, great hospitality. Leave your diet at the door. We'll stop our next time driving north!!

These guys have a pretty good buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lunch is $8 during the week and features Southern style food. For example, on our latest trip they had greens, Lima beans, Okra, Lemon Pepper Chicken, a rice/seafood dish, cornbread, fresh salad greens, etc. We have tried breakfast both as a buffet and off the menu, both were solid. The buffet had typical breakfast fare for a Southern area. I've heard from several people to avoid anything off the menu that might not come out as you'd expect. Pork chops were reported as chewy and overdone, burgers I hear are 50/50. They get 4 stars for the buffet and what we've tried. Not amazing, but generally solid. They get 2 for the upkeep and service (which is hit or miss).
